Nonviolent Communication · For teams

Better communication, stronger teams.

I'm Juan Catalano. I teach the NVC framework, help teams navigate hard conversations, and mediate where conflict arises. I work based on this principle: how you communicate is how you build.

Navigating hard conversations is not only about clarity and precision.

Understanding and empathy are equally important in the short and the long term. Deep understanding of oneself and others leads to better team dynamics and effectiveness. Nonviolent Communication is a practical method, simple to understand, yet hard to practice. Years of applying it and helping others get unstuck on their own practice have given me pragmatic insights and perspective.

01 · Ways of collaborating

Three ways of working.

Teaching the framework, 1-1 sessions to help with live conversations and dynamics, or sitting in the room when a conflict is damaging your progress.

01

Workshops & training

A half or full day with your team. With a heavy practice component. Everyone leaves with the same shared vocabulary.

Quality time with one person, or a pair of founders, to help navigate specifics while learning NVC by applying it in real-life situations.

Mediation

When conflict has become a pain point, I help all parties reach mutual understanding and clear agreements through a structured process that ends with requests everyone can say yes to.

02 · Background

I learned by practicing it in high-performance teams.

Before helping others, I spent sixteen years building startups, running product and engineering teams.

I learned this on the job.

I'm not a therapist, and I didn't study this in a classroom. I initially ran into NVC because of a real concern for improving the way I was giving and receiving feedback. It ended up being the most impactful framework and practice in my skill set as a leader.

02

The teams I ran were demanding.

We shipped at startup pace, with high ambitions and holding people to a high standard. NVC allowed us to work with smart, opinionated people, staying honest with each other and still wanting to work together the next day.

03

People stayed.

What I'm proudest of isn't a launch. It's that people on our teams stuck around, and a lot of them are still close years later. That's what I want to help you assemble: teams that build a strong foundation to create great things together.

03 · Who is this for

For teams that aim high.

I work with teams that care about their group's culture as much as they care about output and results. Sustainable performance and lasting relationships grow from the same place.

Seasoned leaders balancing candor with strong feedback.

Teams of chief residents working on high stakes and the pressure of a top-tier medical service.

First-time managers learning to give feedback that lands.

Teams working around a specific project like running a conference.

Conflicts often arise in the day-to-day work of a chief resident, and no one prepares us or teaches us how to resolve them. The NVC workshop offered us useful tools to incorporate into our practice. It should be offered to all chief medical residents and anyone in a leadership position.

Applying NVC in the safety of a workshop is the first step; the immediate challenge is sustaining that conscious effort amid the friction of everyday work. We had seen Juan’s work from the outside and immediately knew we needed him. Throughout the process, he was our strongest anchor. In moments when inertia or emotion got the best of us, the 1:1 sessions became the space where someone could center us and remind us why what we were doing, and how we were doing it, mattered.

The workshop led by Juan Catalano at the USAL School of Medicine on Nonviolent Communication (NVC) was an excellent experience for improving collaborative communication within work teams. Through the proposed dynamics, we worked on tools to express ideas, identify needs, and make effective requests. An extremely enriching experience.
